Survey Shows Radio Has Become Marketers’ Bellwether

In today’s confusing whirlwind of marketing choices, radio advertising seems to have become a bellwether.  Radio has been getting high ratings not only among local ad agencies, but also from local “direct” buyers. Data is the New Bacon

In this world, there are always ingredients, products or events that disrupt culture and make an impact. A few years ago, it was bacon. Bacon has moved from the breakfast table to the dinner table and ultimately to desert. It could be found on anything from soups to cupcakes. Similarly, data has found its place everywhere and in anything we do. That is probably why, Amber Hameed, Vice President, Information Systems, Dollar Shave Club referred to data as “the new bacon.” Data can be found anywhere and by anyone.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, only 60% of U.S. adults had some form of life insurance and 20% believed that they didn’t have enough. The most common reasons for owning life insurance: cover burial and final expenses, help replaced lost wages of a wage earner and leave some money/inheritance.

One of the hottest topics in audio today is podcasting. There are now more than 700,000 active podcasters and recent research shows that 51% of the U.S. population have listened to a podcast, with 22% of the population listening on a weekly basis.

In this edition, Erica Farber, President and CEO of the RAB speaks with RAB’s SVP of Digital Services, Dave Casper. Representing the RAB, Dave recently attended Podcast Movement held in Orlando, Florida. This conference, that began in 2014, now welcomes over 3,000 people in attendance and focuses its content entirely on podcasting.

Political Media Buying 2020: Still Way Too Early Prediction

I stated that PQ Media is forecasting $8.33 billion is going to be spent by candidates and their PACs, as well as by special interest groups supporting/not supporting ballot initiatives or referendums. In mid-July, a local newspaper that has been in existence for 233 years announced that it would be cutting its print version to only three days a week.  In an interview, the director of one of the local universities responded: “It’s devastating to communities.  Not only do they lose their news, it erodes everything else in terms of civic participation.”

It’s Been Just Over a Year Since the Supreme Court Opened the Floodgates – So, Can Radio Finally Start Taking Ads?

In May 2018, the Supreme Court sided with the State of New Jersey in Murphy v. NCAA, and struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (“PASPA”), which was a federal statute that prohibited states themselves from legalizing sports betting.[1]

While the Supreme Court’s decision did not automatically make sports betting legal, the decision did open the door for each state to decide whether sports betting should be legal within its borders.

And no matter how you look at it, it is one of the biggest commitments you can make.  With a commitment like this, you need someone you can trust by your side.  Nope, not a significant other, mother, father or friend. Political Media Buying 2020: “Where Does Radio Fit?”

Just to recap, based on previous elections, PQ Media projects that political media buying could exceed $8 billion in 2020, possibly as high as $8.5 billion. Monies have already been spent in 2019 that exceed 2015 figures, particularly on marketing services like public relations, direct marketing, telemarketing, promotional products, experiential marketing and market research.
